When talking about Quang Tri travel, many people always think about the land where is full of attractions with historical vestiges, especially the days of fierce fighting. About 19,000 is the number of martyrs who died in Quang Tri Province during the two resistance wars against the French and Americans. With a large number of martyrs, Quang Tri really needs a national Martyrs Cemetery and probably, Truong Son National Martyrs’ Cemetery is formed because of this reason.
In Quang Tri province’s tourist attractions, Truong Son National Martyrs’ Cemetery is where many misery memories of a time are preserved, additionally, this is also a place for tourists from all parts have the opportunity to respectfully offer incense, to commemorate the soldiers who dedicated their lives to protect the peace of the country. Truong Son National Martyrs’ Cemetery, located on Ben Tat Hill, Vinh Truong Commune, Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province, is a majestic cemetery which is commensurate with the enormous sacrifices of the heroic martyrs.
Truong Son National Martyrs’ Cemetery was started being built in 10/1975, after 2 years of construction, the cemetery was officially completed and put into operation. The process of building the Truong Son Martyrs’ Cemetery also showed the respect of people in Quang Tri province to the heroes fallen. From the overall architectural blocks which was built carefully and monumental by the prestigious designers to the small details such as stone monuments, inscriptions, patterns ... all were built by a group of craftsmen from Quang Nam.
Currently, with the total area of up to 140,000 m2 (including 23,000 m2 land area of tombs, 7.000 m2 of monuments land, 60,000 m2 of green woodland, 35,000 m2 of aquariums, 15,000 m2 of roads on the campus), Truong Son National Martyrs’ Cemetery is considered the most monumental cemetery of our country and is the resting place of more than 10,000 martyrs in Quang Tri, with thousands of graves of the martyrs in all the country buried in this place.
Besides, Truong Son Cemetery is also a unique architecture. Firstly, there is an imposing monument area located on a hill of 32m high. At the memorial, visitors will admire the beautiful works of reliefs illustrating scenes of Truong Son soldiers in the resistance. Then, the monument stands majestically. The monument is made of white stone, with 3 sides and empty gut. Strangely, there is a green Bodhi tree growing by itself behind the monument. The Caretaker at the cemetery says that it is a sacred Bodhi tree with deep spiritual value with this land.
From the monument, visitors can see the panoramic land of the martyrs’ tombs. Here, the heroes can come from different lands, but perhaps, all have the same faith, the joy on the same cemetery plot. Seen from above, the tombs are aligned, divided into several areas as the image of soldiers who are marching and practicing. The land around the tombs are embellished by the works such as lakes, rivers, plants, flowers... and most outstanding, a mutual "merit certificate” for all, the “Tổ quốc ghi công” Statue.
